History of the Bulgarian-Orthodox Congregation in Sydney

The Bulgarian Church Congregation "St. Ivan Rilski" in Sydney, Australia, was founded on April 4, 1999.  The name of the Congregation - "St. Ivan Rilski" - refers to Saint John of Rila (Bulgarian: Свети Иван Рилски, sveti Ivan Rilski, 876 - c. 946) who is revered as the patron saint, spiritual leader and protector of Bulgaria and Bulgarians around the world.  He is traditionally regarded as the founder of the Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monument.

The Bulgarian-Orthodox Congregation in Sydney is gathered under the aegis of the Bulgarian Christian Eastern Orthodox Church.  The purpose of the Congregation is to unite and organise orthodox Bulgarians in NSW, to encourage them to become members of the community and take part in the building of a Bulgarian cultural and spiritual centre with a community house, school, organizations, dance groups etc.  The participation of everyone is needed so we can reach our goal - the building of the centre.  The Australian authorities have officially registered the Church community.
